Oprah moved to Chicago in 1983 to host the local low rated morning show called AM Chicago. Her first airdate was January 2, 1984 and in a short span, maybe a matter of months since she took over the show, AM Chicago went from last place in their time slot to the highest rated show of all time in that time slot. The Phil Donohue show is also filmed in Chicago and appeared on the same TV network, his show was the highest rated but since Oprah came on the scene she took over the highest rated show on the network of all time.
The Am Chicago soon expanded from a half an hour to an hour; they soon renamed the show The Oprah Winfrey Show. The show began airing in September 1986 and she has been number one ever since. Oprah just celebrated her 20th year on the air. There was even a rumored rivalry between Oprah and Donohue. When Oprah began in 1986 there were many people who did not believe that she could keep her show running and here it is 20 years later.
Unfortunately, the reason why many thought she would fail is because she is a black woman and Donohue is a white male. But the truth is, that everyone loves Oprah. Donohue is a tough talking aggressive hard nose journalist and Oprah is a soft-spoken woman but she gets the answers she needs and she understands the problems of the American people.
A few years back, Oprah Winfrey was involved in a lawsuit and she hired a company called Courtroom Science to help her analyze the jury, Dr. Phil McGraw was one of those people. Oprah was so impressed by Dr.Phil that she invited him on her show and the audience took to him and he became so popular that in 2002 he got his own show that is produced by Harpo Productions. For those who don’t know Harpo is Oprah spelled backwards.
